Emergency Electrician in Topeka, KS

A breaker that won't reset, half the house dark, a hot outlet, a burning smell or a service mast pulled off the wall in a storm. Topeka Electricians is a free quote-referral service, not an electrician or electrical contractor: describe the problem once and independent, locally licensed electricians serving Topeka, KS and nearby towns can reply. Signs you need an electrician soon

Most problems can wait for a weekday. These usually should not:

  • A breaker that trips again as soon as you reset it, or will not reset at all.
  • Half the house dead, or lights that go bright and dim.
  • A burning smell from an outlet, switch, fixture or the panel.
  • A warm, buzzing or scorched outlet or switch, or sparks when you plug in.
  • A service mast bent or pulled loose, a damaged weatherhead, or a meter base knocked crooked after wind, ice or a falling limb.
  • Water near the panel or outlets after a roof leak or a flooded basement.

What to do right now

  1. Smoke or fire: call 911

Get everyone out. Do not open the panel or spray water on it. Call 911 from outside.

  2. Downed line: stay away

Stay well back from a fallen line and anything it touches. Report it on the Evergy outage page. Some rural homes are on FreeState Electric Cooperative (outages 1-800-794-1989); check your bill.

  3. Check whether it is just your house

If the whole block is dark, it is a utility outage, and an electrician cannot restore it.

  4. Check the panel, once

Turn a tripped breaker fully off, then on, one time. If it trips again, leave it off. Never tape it on or put in a larger one.

  5. Unplug and isolate

For a warm outlet, smell or spark, unplug that circuit and leave its breaker off. Then request quotes or call.

Evergy problem or electrician problem?

The utility side

Evergy serves Topeka, Lawrence and most nearby towns. In general it handles the poles, transformer, service drop and meter. Outages and downed lines go to the Evergy outage page.

The electrician side

Evergy's service standards say it does not install or maintain customer wiring. That usually means the weatherhead, mast, meter base, panel, wiring and outlets go to a city-licensed electrician.

Half the house dead and some lights dim? One leg of the service may be down on Evergy's side, or a connection may have failed in the meter base or panel. Check the outage map first; if Evergy finds nothing, an electrician should trace it. Do not pull the meter. See when to call Evergy and when to call an electrician.

Storm damage: weatherhead, service mast and meter base

The weatherhead is the hooded cap where the utility's wires enter the service mast, the pipe on your wall. The meter base is the box the meter plugs into. A falling limb, ice or high wind can bend the mast, rip the drop loose or crack the meter base, and Evergy will usually not reconnect until it is repaired.

The typical order in Topeka, KS:

  1. Evergy makes the line safe or disconnects it.
  2. A licensed electrician repairs the mast, weatherhead and meter base under a city permit.
  3. The city signs off. Topeka's 2026 fee schedule lists a $55 "Electrical Service Clearance (Evergy)", which appears to be this step.
  4. Evergy reconnects the drop. Evergy guidance for electricians indicates a meter removed by someone else must be reported so Evergy can reseal it; ask your contractor to handle that.

Never try to push a mast back up. Take photos from a safe distance for your insurer. More: weatherhead and meter base repair explained.

Why emergencies happen in Topeka homes

Storms. The June 8, 1966 F5 tornado killed 17 people, according to the National Weather Service Topeka office, and power and utilities in many parts of the city were out "for weeks." The NWS says the March 18–19, 1984 ice storm is believed to be the worst in Topeka's history; it cut power to around 100,000 people. The December 10–11, 2007 ice storm hit nearly all of Kansas. WIBW reported 12,901 Topeka customers out on June 26, 2024, and Evergy counted about 13,000 Topeka-area outages after the July 31, 2024 storms.

Heat and cold. NOAA 1991–2020 normals for Topeka's Billard airport show 49.6 days a year at 90°F or hotter and about 114 nights at or below freezing. Air conditioners and space heaters both push older circuits hard; see space heaters and tripping breakers.

Older housing. ACS 2020–24 5-year estimates put Topeka's median year built at 1967, with 67.5% of homes built before 1980. Potwin, College Hill, Historic Holliday Park and Old Town have many older houses. Repeated trouble may lead to a panel or wiring check.

What emergency electrical work costs

No reliable Topeka-specific emergency rate is published, so these are national ranges. After-hours visits cost more, and many contractors charge a trip or diagnostic fee. Ask about both before anyone drives out, and get a written, itemized price before repairs; a temporary fix tonight and the full repair can be separate lines. See the Topeka electrician cost guide.

Kansas & Topeka rules in plain terms

Kansas has no statewide electrician license; cities and counties license electricians (K.S.A. 12-1525). In Topeka, ask for the contractor's City of Topeka license and confirm it with Development Services (785-368-3905); the city also posts a licensed-contractor list. Lawrence: Lawrence Building Safety (785-832-7700). Unincorporated Shawnee County: Land Use & Development (785-251-5410). Ask for certificates of liability insurance and workers' comp.

Topeka enforces the 2023 National Electrical Code. Most new wiring, circuits, panels and service changes need a city permit; your contractor normally pulls it. Topeka's 2026 residential trade permit fee is $55, and work started without a permit costs a contractor $500 extra. Topeka issues homeowner trade permits; ask Development Services whether your job qualifies. Never work on a meter, meter base or service entrance yourself.

Kansas gives a 3-business-day right to cancel many door-to-door sales of $25 or more (K.S.A. 50-640), but a repair visit you requested can be excluded. Ask, and get it in writing. Renters: Kansas law requires landlords to keep supplied electrical systems in good and safe working order (K.S.A. 58-2553). Report problems in writing. Not legal advice.

Questions to ask before anyone comes out

Ask on the phone and get the answers in writing:

  • What is your City of Topeka license number? (Or your Lawrence license, if the job is in Lawrence.)
  • Can you send certificates of liability insurance and workers' comp before work starts?
  • Will I get a written, itemized quote that lists parts, labor and the permit?
  • Is there a trip or diagnostic fee, and does it come off the repair price?
  • What is your after-hours or weekend rate, if I need that?
  • Who pulls the permit, and is the fee in the quote?
  • Is Evergy coordination included, such as a disconnect, the service clearance or a meter reseal?
  • Is tonight's fix temporary or permanent, and what will the full repair cost?

Do not pay in full before the work is done. For more on checking a contractor, see do electricians need a license in Kansas.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do when half my house has no power?

Check the breaker panel first. If nothing has tripped, look at the Evergy outage page and ask a neighbor whether their power is out. A half-dark house often means one leg of the 240-volt service is down, on the utility side or at a loose connection in the meter base or panel. If Evergy finds nothing, an electrician should trace it.

The storm pulled the power line off my house. Who fixes it?

Stay away from the line and report it on the Evergy outage page. The mast, weatherhead and meter base on your wall are usually the owner's to repair through a licensed electrician; the city then clears the service and Evergy reconnects. Confirm the split with Evergy for your address.

Is a burning smell from an outlet or panel an emergency?

Treat it as one. Smoke or fire: leave and call 911. If you only smell it, stop using the outlet, turn off its breaker if that is safe, and have a licensed electrician inspect it before anyone uses the circuit again.

How much does an emergency electrician cost in Topeka?

National cost guides put after-hours or emergency work at about $150–$200 per hour plus a call-out fee, and a regular service call at $100–$200. These are published estimates, not quotes. Ask about the trip fee and after-hours rate before anyone drives out, and get a written, itemized price before repairs.

Describe the job once

Say what happened (tripping breaker, dead circuits, a smell, a spark, storm damage), when it started, roughly how old the house is, whether you own or rent, and the panel brand if you know it.
