Safety first. If you see smoke or fire, or smell burning that keeps getting stronger, get everyone out and call 911. If a power line is down, stay well away from it and report it to your utility: Evergy customers can use the Evergy outage page, and FreeState Electric Cooperative members can call 1-800-794-1989. This form is not an emergency line.
What helps contractors quote accurately
- What is happening. A breaker that trips when the space heater or AC runs, dead outlets in one room, half the house without power, lights that flicker, a warm outlet or switch plate, a burning smell, storm damage at the service mast or meter base, or a project such as a panel upgrade, generator or EV charger.
- When it happens. All the time, only on hot afternoons or cold nights, only after a storm, or only when certain appliances run.
- Roughly how old the home is. A 1920s house in College Hill and a 2005 build in southwest Topeka often need very different work.
- Whether you own or rent. Kansas law requires landlords to keep supplied electrical systems in good and safe working order (K.S.A. 58-2553). Report problems in writing. The landlord arranges the electrician.
- Panel brand, if you know it. The label inside the panel door often names the maker. Federal Pacific, Zinsco or a fuse box is worth mentioning.
- Your town and utility. Evergy or FreeState, and whether you are inside Topeka city limits. It matters for permits and for service or meter work.
- Photos later. The form does not take photos, but a contractor may ask for pictures of the panel label or the damage when they contact you.
Before you agree to any work
- Kansas has no statewide electrician license; cities and counties license electricians (K.S.A. 12-1525). In Topeka, ask for the contractor's City of Topeka license and confirm it with Development Services (785-368-3905); the city also posts a licensed-contractor list.
- Ask about any trip or diagnostic fee, and about after-hours rates, before the visit.
- Get a written, itemized quote that says who pulls the permit and whether Evergy coordination is included. Topeka's 2026 residential trade permit fee is $55.
- Don't pay in full upfront.
